How to Acquire a Firearm

In order to bring a firearm onto your books and into your FFL inventory, you must “Acquire” it.

Step 1 – Start the Acquisition Process

In order to start the process of acquiring a firearm, you simply click on the “Add a Firearm” button from the FFL Safe dashboard.

Step 2 – Add Contact

Similar to Disposing a firearm, the first step on the Acquisition screen in FFL Safe is to add the Contact Information of the person or entity from which you are receiving the firearm.

At a minimum, you must enter the ATF-required information for the person, FFL, or government agency from which you are receiving the firearm. You can also enter some optional information which may help you track and manage certain customers.

You can learn everything about how to complete this step in FFL Safe in this article: Adding a Contact (Acquisition)

Step 3 – Add Firearm

After you’ve selected or added the contact information, it is time to enter the firearm information.

If the firearm has previously been in your inventory, you can select it from the list. However, in most cases, you will need to enter the firearm details.

At a minimum, you must enter the ATF-required information for the firearm. However, you can also add optional details about the firearm which help you track and manage your inventory.

Step 4 – Select Date

After you’ve entered the appropraite information for the contact and the firerarm, it is time to select the date of acquisition.

It is important to note that the acquisition date is not necessarily today’s date – in fact, there is some legal signifciance here depending on the details of your particular transaction.

If the acquisition (your receipt and possession of the firearm) happened on a previous date, you must eneter the actual date of acquisition. However, you could end up in some serious trouble here if not done correctly. If you’re looking for more information on this topic, check out this ATF Compliance Course.

Step 5 – Save Information/Add Firearm

An important final step in the acquisition process in FFLSafe is to save the information. Until the information is saved, the acquisition has NOT been made.

You can save teh infomration and complete the entry into your bound book by clciking on the “Add Firearm” button after the contact, firearm information, and date have been entered.

Clicking “Add Firearm” will cause a pop-up window to appear asking if you want to add this firearm.

This is redundant because clicking “Yes” as an asnwer to that question will create an entry on your bound book and therefore a record in your ATF records.

We want you to be sure that you want that gun, from that person/entity, and on that date in your system.

Do not worry, if you make a mistake, you can always edit the contact details or the firearm details. And, you can also edit the transaction in the bound book itself.
